Emergency Paediatric First Aid - Course Overview

The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course is a stand-alone Level 3 qualification that covers Unit 1 of the full two-day Paediatric First Aid course.

This qualification provides learners with the opportunity to develop the basic skills and knowledge needed to deal with a range of emergency paediatric first aid situations which could arise when looking after children.

Candidates who have completed this qualification can also complete day 2 of the full paediatric first aid course. There is a time scale of 6 weeks for this to be completed.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is suitable for anyone who cares for infants and young children, including parents, guardians, grandparents, and those working in childcare or education settings who want to develop key paediatric first aid skills.

It can also be useful for newly qualified early years staff who need emergency paediatric first aid training to be included in staff-to-child ratios, while working towards the full Paediatric First Aid qualification where required.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS Statutory Framework)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework sets out the first aid requirements for early years settings. It states that at least one person with a valid Paediatric First Aid certificate must be on the premises whenever children are present, and that person must also accompany children on outings.

The certificate must be from the full Paediatric First Aid course, which meets the requirements set out in Annex A of the EYFS framework. It's important to note that this course only covers Day 1 of the full qualification, so on its own it does not meet this requirement.

Childminders, and any assistants who may be left in sole charge of children for any period of time, need to hold the full PFA qualification. This training must be renewed every three years. Providers should take into account the number of children, staff and layout of premises to ensure that a paediatric first aider can respond to emergencies quickly.

For newly qualified early years staff who completed a Level 2 or Level 3 childcare qualification after the 30th June 2016, either the full Paediatric First Aid certificate or the Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate must be completed within three months of starting work in order to be counted in staff-to-child ratios.

Providers should display (or make available to parents) staff PFA certificates or a list of staff who have a current PFA certificate.

As Per Annex A: Criteria for Effective PFA Training

Taken directly from the Statutory Framework for the early years' foundation stage.

Unit 1: Paediatric Emergency First Aid

  • Assess an emergency situation and prioritise appropriate action
  • Respond to an unresponsive baby or child who is breathing normally
  • Respond to an unresponsive baby or child who is not breathing normally
  • Manage seizures in babies and children
  • Respond to choking incidents
  • Control bleeding
  • Recognise and treat shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolemic shock)

Successful candidates will be awarded the Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate valid for 3 years.

This qualification confirms that the learner has the knowledge and skills to respond to emergency first aid situations involving infants and young children. Refresher training is recommended to help keep skills up to date throughout the certification period.

This course is accredited by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB), ensuring the training meets recognised industry standards for first aid provision.

FAIB accredited courses follow current best practice and are designed to meet workplace and childcare training requirements, giving confidence that course content and certification align with UK first aid expectations.

    Mark,

The course was very good – the course presenter (Dave) was easily the best I've encountered – really outstanding, great balance of humour and fact and anecdotes. All participants seemed very engaged throughout, so he worked his audience well.

I took part in your one-day first aid at work course today at the golf club Aldridge, and I would just like to say that I have done many first aid courses in my time but the one I did today was absolutely fantastic!! The two gents that hosted the course were inspirational and I can promise you we will recommend your company to everyone that walks through our door! I feel for the first time ever, after a course that I would be confident in doing all I could in saving someone's life. I walked out wishing I did the 3-day course, Thank you again and see you in 3 years!!

I just wanted to pass on how much all the staff who attended enjoyed the excellent Defib training yesterday with Rod. We all found it interesting, informative and extremely well taught. Thanks to Rod, we all feel very confident that we would be able to deal with an emergency situation that required either CPR or use of a Defib. Many thanks
