Emergency First Aid at Work - Course Overview

Candidates successfully completing this emergency course will be entitled to act as a first aider in the workplace. This Emergency First Aid at Work course may be more suitable whereby a needs assessment has identified a low-risk work environment. This course complies with the Health & Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 (Appendix 6 Content of an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course)

How long is an Emergency First Aid at Work Course?

The Emergency First Aid at Work course lasts for 1 day (around 6 hours). It is also unit 1 and day 1 of the First Aid at Work 3-day qualification.

Contents / Learning Outcomes

In accordance with Appendix 6 H&S (First-Aid) Regulations 1981

roles and responsibilities of a first aider;
- cross infection;
- recording incidents & actions;
- use of available equipment;
assessing an incident;
unconscious casualties (including seizure);
cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator
choking;
Wounds and bleeding;
Shock;
minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters);

Assessment method: Activities, test paper, practical assessment

Pre-requisite: None

Suggested progression:

Recommended Annual Refresher Training;
Mandatory Requalification every three years by re-taking the one-day course;
Option to upgrade to the First Aid at Work 3 day qualification;
Automatic External Defibrillation training;

I completed a paediatric first aid course with Tom MacArthur a few weeks ago. Today my daughter was showing signs of meningitis with an extremely high temperature. I would like you to pass on my thanks to Tom for teaching me as well as he did because his voice was ringing in my ears telling what I should do, I remained calm and felt confident that I was able to manage the situation until the emergency services arrived. I have had first aid training in the past but none have been as effective, Tom is a real credit to your company. Please pass on my thanks to him, his training was invaluable to me today.

I took part in your one-day first aid at work course today at the golf club Aldridge, and I would just like to say that I have done many first aid courses in my time but the one I did today was absolutely fantastic!! The two gents that hosted the course were inspirational and I can promise you we will recommend your company to everyone that walks through our door! I feel for the first time ever, after a course that I would be confident in doing all I could in saving someone's life. I just wanted to praise Mick for the 2 day first aid refresher course that I attended on 3rd and 4th April 2019. I found that he was a lovely man and teacher and made the course really enjoyable. I have come away feeling that I have learnt something new and gave me the confidence and assistance in order for me to put this into practice in real life. I feel properly trained thanks to Mick and able to cope with anybody that needs first aid. I can't thank Mick enough for what he has taught me.

Usually when I go on a course like this one a trainer is rarely able to keep my attention because he/she talk and I listen (well try to), HOWEVER, Tom was outstanding as he kept me on my toes and I actually am confident in remembering my first aid better. Thank you!
