Automated External Defibrillator (AED) - Course Overview
This course equips learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) during a cardiac arrest. Training is delivered in line with the latest Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a safe, automated device designed to deliver a controlled electric shock to a casualty in cardiac arrest. Early use of an AED can significantly improve survival rates, with chances increasing to as high as 74%, compared to around 6% if treatment is delayed until emergency services arrive.
Who Is This Course For?
This training is suitable for anyone who may be required to use an AED in an emergency or who wants to build confidence in responding to a cardiac emergencies. It is ideal for employees, volunteers, and members of the public across a wide range of workplace and community settings.
The training is especially useful for organisations who already have AEDs on site, helping staff feel prepared to act quickly and effectively while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
Essential AED & CPR Skills
- Approach a casualty safely
- Assess a collapsed casualty
- Correctly apply effective chest compressions to a casualty
- Administer effective rescue breaths to a casualty
- Turn on the AED and attach the electrodes correctly
- Assess cardiac rhythm by the AED
- Perform defibrillation safely
- Place casualty in the recovery position
On successful completion, learners will be awarded an Automated External Defibrillation (AED) certificate, valid for 3 years from the date of issue.
This certification confirms the learner’s ability to safely use an AED and perform CPR in line with current guidance, supporting workplace compliance and emergency response readiness.
This course is accredited by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB), confirming that the training meets recognised industry standards and is delivered in line with current best practice.
FAIB accreditation provides assurance that course content, delivery, and certification comply with UK first aid regulations and quality requirements.

- Duration: Half a day (3.5 hours)
- Group Size: Up to 12 Candidates per 1 Trainer/Assessor
- Assessment Method: Continuous assessment and practical activities
- Pre-requisite: None required - open to all levels of experience
