Level 2 Proportionate / Single Handed Care Practice Course Overview:

The RoSPA Level 2 Award in Proportionate/Single Handed Care Practice is designed to help health and social care professionals deliver safer, one-to-one care.

Moving beyond traditional moving and handling approaches, this qualification focuses on supporting individuals in a way that promotes dignity, independence, choice and wellbeing, while maintaining the highest standards of safety for both service users and staff.

Throughout the course, learners will develop an understanding of proportionate handling principles, risk assessment processes and handling plans, alongside practical skills for using equipment such as hoists, standing aids and in-bed management systems.

This Ofqual award is Ideal for frontline care staff, support workers, community carers and NHS healthcare professionals.

  • Principles of safe, proportionate/single handed care
  • Understanding risk assessments and handling plans
  • Recognising when single handed care is no longer suitable
  • Carrying out pre-movement safety checks
  • Safer moving and handling techniques
  • Using manual and mechanical stand aids
  • In-bed positioning and moving techniques (slide sheets, wedges, etc.)
  • Correct application and use of slings
  • Pre-use safety checks for hoists and slings

On successful completion of the Level 2 Award in Proportionate/Single Handed Care Practice, Learners will receive a certificate confirming they have met all the required learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

This certificate demonstrates that the Learner has been assessed through practical demonstrations and verbal questioning, and has shown the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to deliver proportionate/single handed care safely, confidently and in line with current best practice. The certificate is valid evidence of competence for the Learner's employer and can be used to support ongoing professional development records.

The Level 2 Award in Proportionate/Single Handed Care Practice is a regulated qualification, accredited by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) under qualification number 610/5521/9.

It is awarded by RoSPA Qualifications, an Ofqual-recognised Awarding Organisation, ensuring the course meets nationally recognised standards for quality, consistency and rigour.

This accreditation gives Learners and employers confidence that the qualification has been independently assessed and approved, and that it reflects current best practice in proportionate/single handed care.

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements, however it is desirable that Learners have previous experience in the handling of people, such as having completed a People Moving and Handling course

Total Qualification Time (TQT): 

TQT is the total number of hours required for a Learner to achieve this qualification is 8 hours. 

Assessment:

RoSPA has developed assessment methods to allow Learners to demonstrate that they have met the knowledge, skills and understanding, as detailed in the learning outcomes. Assessment methods for this qualification include: 

  • Practical demonstrations
  • Verbal questions and answers
  • Multiple-choice assessment
